Science
Miss Busby is the subject lead for Science.
Welcome to our Science page at Northmead. Science is a core subject and is a fundamental part of our curriculum. This year we are focusing on the working scientifically objectives to go hand in hand with our excellent knowledge of the curriculum. Typically, we spend between 1 – 2 hours each week on a science lesson. We also encourage the use of trips and visitors to excite the children’s learning and to allow them to put the science into a real life context. Year 3 receive a visit from Dr Helen, who is a palaeontologist, to talk to them about rocks and fossils and Year 5 visit Winchester museum to name a few!
Intent:
At Northmead, our Science curriculum is designed to ensure that all pupils are experiencing science in a fun and engaging way. All pupils are exposed to different working scientifically objectives throughout their time at Northmead and are able to use experiments and investigations to develop their questioning, reasoning, problem solving and understanding further. We intend to develop our Science curriculum further, to ensure that learning leads to the acquisition of knowledge and understanding of the world around.
At the heart of our science curriculum is the use of practical scientific investigations. Teachers plan practical investigations to ensure that pupils are able to use their problem solving and inquisition to complete tasks.
Implementation:
- Every year group will build on the knowledge from the previous year so that learning progresses.
- Embed skills to encourage working scientifically throughout lessons.
- New vocabulary and key words are taught directly at the start of lessons so children are aware of any words they may come across. We often pre-teach this to the children.
- Teachers set a high standard for the children and lead by modelled example.
- Where appropriate, we use outside areas for our learning.
Impact:
- Most children will achieve age related expectation for Science at the end of their cohort year.
- Children will be able to ask questions linking to an idea and reflect on this accordingly.
- Children will be able to plan, complete and reflect on experiments they have conducted including the links to the world around them.
- Children will be able to work as part of a team and listen to the thoughts and ideas of their peers.
- Children will be able to identify the Science behind the learning and explain this both verbally and in written form.
