Little Wandle
At Northmead Junior School, we teach phonics through a scheme called Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised. This is a complete systematic synthetic phonics programme (SSP) developed for schools by schools. It is based on the original Letters and Sounds, but has been revised to provide a complete teaching programme which meets all the expectations of the National Curriculum.
Children will have been taught phonics throughout their infant schooling, but for some children they need reinforcement and additional teaching when they reach us.
These children will receive a daily phonics lesson. In school, they will also read books which target the sounds introduced that week. Children will continue to bring home reading books from the accelerated reader scheme.

Why did we choose Little Wandle?
Stoughton infants, our main feeder infant school, has adopted this scheme. Those children starting Northmead who still need additional input can build on what they have learnt during KS1
The scheme provides engaging resources.
It has a systematic approach which is thorough and detailed.
Buying in to the scheme allows teachers to engage with high quality training.
